I attended Tryon High School, (Tryon, NC), graduated in 1964, then attended Newberry College, (Newberry, SC), graduated in 1968, degree in Chemistry. Drafted in 1969, attended basis training at Fort Bragg, (Fayetteville, NC) then trained at Fort McClellan, (Anniston, Alabama).

Reported for Officer Candidate School (Engineering/Signal) at Fort Belvoir, (Fairfax County, Virginia) in December 1969 and graduated May 1970. Married June 6, 1970 and one (1) week later reported to Military Police training school at Fort Gordon, (Augusta, Georgia) where within six (6) months I was assigned Commander of the Leadership Command Unit (a two week special training unit for incoming soldiers with MP MOS that would be barracks leaders).

August of 1971 flew into Vietnam and assigned to the 504th Military Police Brigade. I was stationed in Phu Bai, Vietnam (home base). I was given liaison responsibilities in Hue, Vietnam where we met weekly. I also had oversight command of the MP unit stationed at Eagle Beach (in country R&R). Returned home January 1972. Joined Army Reserve Unit February 1972 and left in June 1974.
